Budhanilkantha to Nagi Ghompa Day Trek

1 Day

Overview

A short drive from Kathmandu takes us to Budhanilkantha temple, dedicated to Hindu god Vishnu and located at the foothills of Shivapuri hill. This trek is one of the most preferred treks in Nepal for Hindu as well as Buddhist practitioners.

About the tour

8 km from the centre of Kathmandu, at Budhanilkantha, you can see the most spellbinding statue of Hindu God Vishnu. It is located at the base of Shivapuri hill and it is the largest and the most beautiful stone carving from the Lichhavi period. Many pilgrims come here to visit this place because Budhanilkantha has a special significance in the Hindu religion.

After spending some time here, our hike will continue toward Nagi Ghompa via Shivapuri hill. Located in the hills on the northern border of the Kathmandu Valley, Shivapuri Peak is a bit of an energetic day’s hike.  After checking the formalities at the Shivapuri entrance gate, we will enter the Shivapuri watershed and wildlife area. Then our trail goes through pine and cherry forests up to Nagi Ghompa, where a monastery is located. Nagi Ghompa sits on a slope high above the Kathmandu Valley and is home to more than 100 nuns related with Ka-Nying Shedrub Ling Monastery in Kathmandu. Nuns from all over the Himalayan region come here to study, practice and meditate in the quiet and peaceful surroundings.

Beyond the monastery, the trail goes steep uphill through the rhododendron, oak and bamboo forests from which we can enjoy the beauty of the snowy Himalayas such as Ganesh Himal, Langtang-Lirung, Dorji Lhakpa. Then we will take a shortcut downhill to Budhanilkantha and drive back to Kathmandu.
